Garrison Church
On the site of the old Chelsea Barracks, is the beautiful and quaint 19th Century Garrison Church, or Guards' Chapel, which is seriously under threat of demolition to make way for the proposed development.
The church, designed by George Morgan in 1859, is the only remaining Garrison Church in Central London, and along with the railings in Chelsea Bridge Road, is all that remains of the original Victorian barracks after they were rebuilt in 1960.
This church was the original guards' chapel at the barracks, and saw many British men off to wars from as far back as the Boer War, and right up to the Gulf Wars. It is now considered a memorial to our soldiers, and it would be an absolute atrocity to see it torn down.
English Heritage has recommended that it be listed. The church would benefit the community by providing a community space suitable for any one of the following uses: Church, Boy scout hall, Cafe, Concert hall, to hold charity events, Amateur theatre etc.
So far, we have the following organisations and societies supporting the English Heritage listing of the Garrison Church:
- English Heritage recommended listing
- Victorian Society
- Friends of Sloane Square
- Chapels Society
- National Churches Trust
- Ancient Monument Society
- SAVE Britains Heritage
- Victoria & Albert Museum
- Heritage of London
- Bishop of London
